Academia Igualada is a private, secular educational
institution assisted by the Government of Catalonia.
We are a living school:
It was in 1939 when the city of Igualada placed its founder, Antoni Jorba i Soler, in charge of leading a center dedicated to education.
For more than seventy-five years, Academia Igualada has grown and developed along with the pace of society, but has always remained loyal to its ethos and to the school’s project: a living school, close to families, welcoming, whose aim is the academic studies and education of students in the values of responsibility, the determination to succeed, coexistence, tolerance and respect.
A comprehensive education:
At Academia Igualada we consider that each child is unique and, therefore, we offer them a range of opportunities and strategies to grow as a person and to enjoy the pleasure of learning.
We want our children to be emotionally confident people, who think and act independently, that have the right tools to be capable in the future and to communicate, research, create, reflect, think and that make a commitment to society based on the values they have developed.
Educating people that make their mark:
The educational project EMPREMTA (mark) represents our commitment to the comprehensive education of our students, and highlights the value of family-school relations as an essential part of students’ educational process, as we believe that parents are the main educators and need to work with teachers and other education professionals.
The Empremta project revolves around 5 points: emotion, social, competency, global and family.
All these points will impact on the student and make them discover their own potential, helping them to discover the values that need to guide our behavior and that will allow them to be an active, responsible and fully integrated member of society.
We work in Catalan, Spanish and English from Pre-school Education. We use English as a learning language from P3 onwards. We promote a taste for music at all levels and we participate in the Sona Escola Project, with 5th and 6th grade primary students. We use IT tools: digital interactive whiteboards and iPads. We use resources and strategies that help students to expand their own knowledge and to know how to engage through the Thinking Culture.
We have activities, cultural trips and stays planned for each year in order to bring our students closer to reality and to make learning more meaningful.
We promote charity campaigns that put into practice empathy, justice and generosity with the UNESCO School Project.
We monitor individuals to help them grow:
- We work on emotional intelligence
- We work on some subjects in small groups: Languages, mathematics, etc.
- In some learning sessions, we support students with two teachers in the class in order to help them overcome difficulties. Arts and Crafts, Motor Program…
- We communicate with families with personal interviews and meetings with the group/class, digital platform…
- The Psychopedagogy Department helps to guide teachers and families in teaching.
- We work in projects, small groups, workshops, cooperative work, etc. We have specific programs based on multiple intelligences.
Emotional and affective
The emotional link that we provide in the Academia’s nursery is key in these first years so that the child feels supported and confident at school. We provide the affective and emotional security needed so that children enjoy their experience in school, feel confident, cared for, motivated, loved. This is the basis of any learning.
The Academia is committed to an education based on early stimulation that respects each child’s individual pace and can, therefore, receive a quality education.
One of our aims is for children to learn from discovering for themselves. In this way, we offer stimulating spaces, materials and ideas so that they independently experience through a calm and relaxed atmosphere, so that they can develop in complete freedom and with a sense of belonging to a group.
At the Academia we consider the personal treatment that each child needs. Reduced groups and support allow us to respect the different rates of development and to work on the different intelligences of each student.
We work to achieve our goals based on different methodological approaches which we have produced ourselves.
- Collaborative working.
- Thinking routines and projects.
- We work in English.
- Experimental workshops.
- Imagination and creativity.
We work to give continuity to the projects started in the pre-school stage. By gaining new skills and knowledge, our students will continue to ensure their personal and social development.
We use Lively teaching that strives for continuous innovation. We promote responsibility habits and a love of learning. We work in projects, small groups, workshops, cooperative work. We have specific programs based on multiple intelligences.
The fact that children work cooperatively means that they develop social skills and abilities that will be very useful in their future. The roles in cooperative work help them to discover their strengths and we give them the tools to overcome their difficulties.
The thinking culture has been part of our methodology for several years. Learning and teaching in a specific, systematic and organized manner is a priority in our school. In this way we have more reflective students with structured thoughts and more independence, with greater language proficiency, more able to create products, to understand different points of view, to explain processes and to document learning.
The purpose of compulsory education is to get children to learn the necessary tools to understand the world and to become individuals that are able to actively and critically contribute to a pluralistic, diverse and continually changing society.
We respect diversity
We provide support and are psychopedagogy-oriented. We offer a Mediation team in conflict resolution. We reinforce individual care and special education needs. We offer the space and time so that students can express their creativity through art and are skilled in-Home Economics.
The Baccalaureate is the post-compulsory stage of secondary education that is defined as preparation for future higher education.
It is divided into two academic years, 1st and 2nd Baccalaureate and the school offers two different options, subsidized and state assisted: science and technology and social sciences and humanities.
Due to its post-compulsory and voluntary nature, we understand that the foundation of the Baccalaureate is based on freedom, responsibility, commitment, confidence and enthusiasm for the selected option.
Beyond the reading schedule, students can stay in their class freely in question sessions with the subject teachers, which will help them to resolve difficulties and improve their performance.
